Finishing and Post-Processing
End-Use Finishing & Post-Processing
Finishing and post-processing is where high-quality prints become production-ready components. Turn MJF prints into end-use-ready parts with scalable post-processing that improves surface quality, durability, and appearance—without slowing down production. AvidPD’s MJF finishing services are built to refine surface texture, enhance performance, and deliver a consistent, professional appearance, whether you’re validating a prototype or scaling post-processing for end-use parts.
Surface Smoothing (Vapor Smoothing for MJF & FDM)
The natural finish of Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) parts is a matte gray with a lightly textured surface. If you need a more refined, sealed, consumer-ready result, AvidPD offers AMT PostPro vapor smoothing, a fully automated post-processing method that significantly improves surface appearance and feel without compromising the mechanical properties of 3D printed polymers.
Vapor smoothing creates a uniform, near injection-molded finish and increases surface impermeability, making parts easier to clean and ideal for dyeing or coatings. This option is available for MJF, and can also be applied to Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) parts when the application calls for it.
Key benefits of vapor smoothing:
Sealed Surface
for easier cleaning and improved hygiene
Improved Cosmetics
with a smoother, more consistent finish
Better Resistance
to moisture absorption and surface wear
Enhanced Readiness
or dyeing, coatings, and end-use handling
When to choose smoothing vs. natural finish
Natural Finish
Choose Natural Finish / Dyed Black when texture is acceptable, speed is the priority, or the part is primarily functional.
Vapor Smoothing
Choose Vapor Smoothing when you need a premium look and feel, easier cleaning, improved sealing, or a more consumer-facing / end-use finish.
DeepDye Coloring
With DyeMansion DeepDye Color (DDC) technology, we can color your Multi Jet Fusion end-use parts and products at scale with repeatable, production-ready results.
The DyeMansion DM60 is an industrial post-processing system that uses heat and pressure to infuse pigments deep into a part’s surface, delivering durable, UV-stable color that won’t chip or fade while preserving mechanical properties for functional, consumer-ready end-use parts.
Great for applications like:
Medical and lab fixtures and housings
Consumer goods and branded components
Wearables and ergonomic parts
Electronics enclosures and covers

I’ve utilized the design engineering and rapid prototyping services of Avid Product Development since the beginning, in 2012. Their 3D printing capability alone has remained state of the art, much less their approach and resourcing to provide technical solutions. They are budget-friendly and time conscious. We’ve worked through many challenging designs and always come through with the final product or next step ”cemented” and/ or in clear focus. The team is personable, their communication is reliable and their time tables are often shorter than quoted. I will continue use of the Avid P.D. service bureau as long as they are in operation and will point my network to them for any and all rapid prototyping inquires.Posted on Google![]()

Great customer service, expedient lead times, friendly people. A pleasure to do business with.
Engineered Coatings (Durable Protection for End-Use MJF Parts)
When parts need more than color, engineered coatings add a protective performance layer that helps Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) parts hold up in harsh conditions and high-touch environments. AvidPD offers Cerakote® engineered coatings in a wide variety of colors as a long-term finishing option for end-use applications where durability and resistance matter.
Cerakote uses a polymer-ceramic coating technology that can enhance the performance and physical characteristics of polymer MJF parts, especially when parts face outdoor exposure, repeated handling, chemicals, or abrasion.
When coatings are preferable to dyeing:
Coatings are a better fit when parts need added protection against wear, chemicals, moisture, or outdoor exposure, and not just a consistent color finish.
Hydrophobic properties
Chemical resistance
Abrasion resistance
Heat protection
Harder, more durable finish
Ready to Get Started?
Whether you’re starting with a rough sketch or refining a final design, AvidPD is your partner for innovation. Our team combines technical know-how with a client-first mindset to ensure your product reaches its full potential. Let’s collaborate to turn your ideas into high-performance, market-ready solutions.
Custom Finishes
Turn your product idea into a realistic “show” model with a high-quality custom finish that simulates the look and feel of a production piece. Custom finishes are ideal for engineering proof of design, investor meetings, marketing materials, trade shows, photo shoots, focus groups, and more.
Custom finish examples can include:
- Paint and color matching
- Textures and surface effects such as matte and gloss
- Branding details such as logos, labels, and graphics
- Multi-part assembly and mixed-material look simulations
Expectations: Custom finishes are typically intended for presentation and validation rather than production finishing. Because they are tailored and more hands-on, lead times and per-part costs can be higher than standard finishing options.
Assembly and Secondary Operations
Assembly
Many products require more than a single printed part. AvidPD supports assembly and secondary operations so you can move from individual components to finished, functional products, whether you are combining multiple printed parts, integrating hardware, or building assemblies that exceed a single printer’s build volume.
From snap-fits to adhesive bonding to heat-set inserts, there are multiple ways to assemble products with several components or create larger assemblies from smaller printed sections. Our engineers help you select the right approach based on performance requirements, tolerances, production volume, and cost targets so your parts arrive assembled, validated, and ready to use.
Assembly method categories we support:
- Mechanical assembly: snap-fits, fasteners, threaded inserts, heat-set inserts, press fits
- Adhesive and bonding: structural adhesives, surface prep guidance, bonding strategies for strength and repeatability
Electrical integration: basic component integration, wire routing considerations, and assembly planning for electromechanical products
Design For Assembly Support
If your part is still in development, we can help you design features that make assembly easier and more reliable, such as alignment pins, fastening bosses, insert locations, and access for tools. This improves repeatability and reduces time and cost during fabrication.
Have an assembly or hardware integration requirement? Tell us what you are building and we will recommend a reliable, cost-effective assembly method.
Engineering Validation And Testing
Assembly choices should be backed by data. We publish testing and best practices to help teams choose fastening methods with confidence. See our in-depth report on testing ten fastening methods for 3D printed PA12 parts, including pull-out strength, tolerances, and installation best practices.
